it addresses the future as 1984 which has already passed us by without great change. It is a very intense study of what could happen if a government essentially grows too large or too powerful, controlling all aspects of a citizens life. It is not a pleasant picture, for the most part, and in light of his novel many people have become powerful skeptics where the government is concerned. In retaliation to such arguments and such ideas Max Nieman has written a book discussing the benefits of big government. With this in mind the following paper examines some of the most powerful elements of the society presented in Orwells book concerning government and control. The paper then examines the general arguments of Nieman in his book. The paper finishes with a discussion of the two, primarily examining the economic portion of big government. Orwell Orwells classic futuristic novel is one that is constantly referred to in regards to the theme of power possessed by a nation or a society. It is a story that involves the power of Big Brother, an entity that ultimately controls everything people do, say, and even think. In these respects it is the ultimate power novel that frighteningly displays what life would be like if the controlling powers in existence truly had all the power possible. As one author summarizes, "Orwell foresaw a world in which Big Brother had a mustache, the government tried to keep people from enjoying sex, mysterious bombs went off in big cities, parents were sent to jail on the testimony of their children, politicians changed their records and no one noticed, newspapers altered established facts, a decrease one day in the amount of chocolate in a candy bar was announced as an increase the next day, and the ...
