Barring some global catastrophe that changes life as we know it, absolutely there will be "enormous global markets for standardized consumer products" in the future, and likely well before we approach 20 years into it. Prior to the Asian currency crisis of 1997-1998 and then the recession following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there was much talk of the "big emerging markets" (BEM) and what they would mean for large multinational organizations. Those events combined with the loss of much of a full generation to AIDS in Africa have changed the predictions somewhat, but likely only lengthening the timetable. Where the Big Emerging Markets Are In the mid-1990s, BEMs were referred to in two ways. Some authors hailed the emergence of regional BEMs - South America, Africa, non-Chinese Asia, China and a few others. Others, including Garten (1998) maintained that BEMs were individual countries located all around the world. Garten (1998) identified ten: "Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Poland, Turkey, India, Indonesia, China and South Korea" (p. 3). Those world events mentioned earlier combined with crushing economic trouble in much of South America have changed the landscape some, but not to the extent that the BEMs no longer exist and no longer hold promise of marketing heaven for the future.
