fathers and sons. Much of the conflict in the play revolves around Loman and his son Biff. He wants Biff to be someone important in life. He believes that he
and Biff are not common men, but men with visions and men with pride and thus men who succeed. However, Loman and Biff are average individuals and will never amount
to much of anything. This brings into play the character of Bernard, the son of Lomans friend (rival) who is successful and has achieved a life that Loman perhaps thought
his son deserved better. With this basic information at hand the following paper compares and contrasts the characters of Biff and Bernard. Biff and Bernard While the story essentially
revolves around Loman and his son, and other members of their family, we rarely see Bernard, or we see him far less than we do Biff. But, the way in
which he is presented is powerful for it is with envy and confusion that Loman tries to understand the success of this young man. Loman uses Bernards father as something
of a subject of judgment against which he can judge his own success. He does not understand why Bernard is successful while Biff is not. Bernard is a young man
who has always studied hard and done what is right in order to get ahead. He has gone to college and is a successful lawyer. In essence, he is the
success story concerning the American Dream. Biff, on the other hand, is not a success. While he was popular in high school and good at football, even getting two scholarships
to college, he flunked and failed and never graduated. He wanted to get his last credits, and finish school, but then discovered his father was having an affair. This tragedy
