reality . The story opens when a man--an unidentified man--is about to be hanged. As the story unfolds, much is learned about this man named Peyton Farquhar. In fact, during
the civil war, this slave owner is about to be hanged and of course, his situation may not evoke as much sympathy at it might had he been a slave.
Nevertheless, the story is not political. It does really not provoke much ideation in respect to slavery. RAther, it focuses on this man, Peyton, who is about to lose his
life. The three part short story does have a plot, but it is rather illusive because of the nature of the story. Not until the surprise ending does the reader
know that Peyton was in fact being hanged and he had not escaped. Nothing had really changed from the beginning of the work. What is shown, and is a part
of the plot, is Peytons journey that unfolded as he was actually being hanged. It is somewhat of a fantasy but a student writing on this subject would want to
point out that the subject of death and dying has taken on new meaning in recent times. There is now recognition of similar events in the recollection of those encountering
near death experiences. For Peyton, the experience was one of death and not near death. However, the reader is privy to this experience first hand. At the same time, this
whimsical journey might be considered a supplement to the plot, or an excursion, but because the entire story centers on this imaginary journey, one would have to include it as
