scripture were divinely inspired to record the Bible as if it were dictated by God. The First Vatican Council went so far as to refer to God as the "author"
of all "sacred and canonical" texts (Elmer). However, by the time of Vatican II (1965), the Catholic Church was beginning to equivocate on this point by indicating that the human
writers of the Bible were "inspired" by the Holy Spirit, rather than taking dictation (Elmer). The idea that God is the author of the Bible goes back to the second
century and Clement of Alexandra, who wrote that God was both the immediate and primary cause of both the "Old and New Testaments" (Elmer). Scholarly opinion today, both Protestant
and Catholic, accepts that the recording of scripture was influenced by God, but also shaped and molded by the people writing it and by the cultures and times in which
they wrote. As Ian Elmer, Australian lecturer on the New Testament at ACU National (formerly Australian Catholic University), as pointed out, few scholars sustain the idea that the "Biblical writers
were merely oracles of god, channeling faithfully every word that God whispered n their ears" (Elmer). However, people of faith cannot dismiss the idea that God influenced the scriptures. The
question to explore is-How? The first factor in his equation is the widely popular notion that God acts in human history. If God acted then, it is logical that
