He also discusses the theological perspective that ones purpose is to mature in Christ and offers two elements that are involved in maturity: immediate obedience in specific situations and long-range character growth" (p. 23). The author says that maturity grows or increases over a period of time, it is not instant (Crab, 1977). It begins with justification and it ends with glorification. Between these two points in time, people need to choose to be obedient and also choose to experience changes in our inner hearts. Through this we will experience both external and internal changes all through our choice to obey God (Crab, 1977). Both our motivations and our personality will change when our goal is to please God and not ourselves. This is an important theme for counseling. Crabb does provide four specific approaches to integrate the Bible with counseling. The approaches deal with the issue of Scripture versus psychology. Separate but Equal approach has to do with the Bible versus Psychology. It represents people who believe that the two are separate; Scripture deals with the theological and spiritual and psychology is under the umbrella or medical paradigms. People who have real psychological problems need to seek professional psychological help from trained professionals. Tossed Salad approach advocates believe Scripture and psychology overlap in some areas. Proponents take parts of psychology and parts of psychology and mix them together. While some may consider this Christian psychology, Crabb believes that this approach does not properly filter the components in psychological theories that are contrary to Scripture.
