of contention resolved. Research is not a conclusive process, but rather an ongoing process. Through the process of citation, each new piece of research builds upon the work of researchers
who came before and published their own findings. In the future, other researchers will likely use todays research as the basis for their own explorations. Over time, older research may
seem to be entirely contradicted. For many, this seems to create a problem. If the foundational research is invalidated, doesnt that invalidate everything that came after it? The answer, of
course, is no. When research is contradicted and shown to be "wrong", it is not typically the same thing as getting an answer on a test wrong. Human knowledge is
ultimately limited, and there is only so much that is known about any given subject. Given this view, one might be able to understand how research in the past might
be valid and consistent in itself, but still produce results that are themselves known to be false by the standards of contemporary research. This does not devalue the older research,
it simply demonstrates the incidence of bias in that research. Bias refers to a fundamental error in research design or methodology that produces spurious results with the appearance of accuracy
(because even biased research can be consistent in itself) (Pannucci & Wilkins, 2010). Bias might manifest in research in a number of ways. For instance, it could occur in the
planning stage of research, wherein one neglects to account for a particularly important causal factor in deciding what factors to analyze or study in ones research. The exclusion of this
factor might be due to negligence, or even ignorance of the factors existence or importance. It might also appear in the data collection phase of research, in that one might
