Essay / Research Paper Abstract
In June of 1990, Russell and Laura Jones of St. Paul, Minnesota found a cross burning in their yard. Two adolescents were charged; one plead guilty, the other was found guilty of a St. Paul 'hate speech' ordinance which specifically makes bias-motivated cross burning a crime. The case was eventually appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme court. This 6 page paper describes the themes and findings, the controversial issues and different perspectives of the case as presented by Edward J. Cleary in the book, Beyond the Burning Cross.
