States as opposed to other locales. This examination looks specifically at the advantages of living in the US over living in Mexico. Both countries are federal republics, with democratic governance.
While the government in Mexico has typically "respected and promoted human rights at the national level," the US federal Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (BDHRL) asserts that violations
of human rights in Mexico have recently been reported at the state and local level (BDHRL). While complaints of torture at the local level have been investigated, authorities have rarely
prosecuted officials charged with torture (BDHRL). The Mexican governments effort to foster respect for human rights is opposed by a "deeply entrench culture of impunity and corruption" (BDHRL). The
following human rights violations were reported in 2006: "unlawful killings by security forces; vigilante killings; kidnappings, including by police; torture, particularly to force confessions...arbitrary arrest and detention," plus more
specific human rights problems (BDHRL). While there are instances of human rights violations in the US, they do not appear to be systemic, which is arguably the case in Mexico.
As this suggests, one distinct advantage to living in the US is its legal, political and judicial system, which is geared toward guaranteeing specific rights that are spelled-out in the
Constitution. There are also financial advantages to living in the US. In American culture, owning your own home or business is frequently referred to as "living the American dream"
(Smith). The US financial system currently enables more Americans than ever before in the countrys history to own their own homes, which is a development that has occurred due to
