examination of the pain and reality of having ex-lovers and as such speaks of the human need to be loved, but also the modern ability to dismiss quickly lovers who
do not work out. The following paper examines human value and morality as it involves the story by Duncker. Betrayal In the beginning of the story the narrator
details how she is at a dinner party where all of the guests are the ex-lovers of the woman, Helene, throwing the party. There is a sense of jealousy amongst
the women, yet they are also all obviously friends. The narrator assumes, when she examines the physical stature of the women, that she is perhaps the next in line to
be this womans lover because she would "complete the row" (Duncker 221). In this there seems to be no interest in anything that may or may not be morally right.
There also seems to be no indication that anything involving human value exists in the minds of the women. As the story progresses there begins to be some indication
that pain is involved, that some love is involved, and that all the women somehow understand they all want the same thing. They all really want to be loved but
they are part of a modern world where they are clearly in and out of relationships all the time. The fact that they continue to all be friends, and even
share lovers, gives the reader and indication that the women do appreciate human value. If they did not they would quickly discard one another and move on, never remaining friends.
But they have a sense of desperation that realizes human value and wants love. In the end of the story the narrator and Helene are waiting for Helenes ex-lover,
