Wounds are a commonly encountered problem in the clinical setting. They arise from a variety of problems ranging from injuries or incisions to
underlying physiological changes. Wound care is a critical component of patient well-being. Coutts and Sibbald (2005) emphasize that wounds can result in a significant societal costs as well.
Acute wounds, those wounds that arise from injuries and surgeries, bites, burns, etc., are wounds that are likely to heal within a certain time frame (Bowler, Duerden, and Armstrong, 2001).
Chronic wounds, in contrast, are those wounds: "most frequently caused by endogenous mechanisms associated
with a predisposing condition that ultimately compromises the integrity of dermal and epidermal tissue" (Bowler, Duerden, and Armstrong, 2001).
Chronic wounds are more unpredictable than acute wounds in terms of the time that it will take them to heal or the manner in
which they will heal (Bowler, Duerden, and Armstrong, 2001). Improperly-cared-for wounds present the potential for long term physiological complications as well
as long-term emotional impacts. Not only does the type of care needed vary according to the type of wound, patients are not always able to obtain the supplies needed
to properly care for their wounds. Products like silver dressings, for example, are not readily available and when they are the cost is sometimes out of the reach of
