type of situation they are facing. This paper describes a situation in which a company is creating a new position, and asks which of two candidates would be the
better choice, and why. Discussion Lets review the scenario briefly: Universal Drugs is a family-owned company with a very authoritarian management structure which they want to change to
a more team oriented system. In order to do this they are creating a new position to supervise all managers and report to the owners. This position calls
for someone who can supervise others and at the same time accept strict supervision; this last observation is based on the fact that the company is "authoritarian" and the people
who supervise this new position may not be able to change their management style even though they apparently want to do so. The problem: choosing the better
candidate. Why is it a problem? Both candidates appear well-qualified for the job and both have significant time invested in the company. Management practices: Management currently is
authoritarian, meaning that decisions are made at the top with no input. This type of leadership often creates resentment in the workforce, which may be why the company has
decided to change. Recommendations: In order to determine the better leader of the two candidates, we need to determine the task structure, position power, and leader-member relations (Northouse, 2004,
