African Scottish women and a black stable boy/father, she was born in an asylum and was raised by foster parents. She was a woman of mixed race and a woman
who understood the oppression felt by women in her African world. "Her stories deal primarily with the fate of women in African society...Black women have a certain history of oppression
within African culture. . . womens problems are rooted in custom and tradition. What is certainly very dominant here is that the male had a superior position to the
female" (Hastings, 2004). One of her stories that clearly touches on these realities is "The Collector of Treasures." The following paper examines the role of violence within the culture of
the story and also discusses the irony in the story. Both of these topics, violence and irony, serve to support an image of a woman who has grown and a
woman who will not be oppressed. Violence and Irony There is little doubt that the main female character in this story is oppressed. She has been abused and
used by her husband and then left to care for the children herself. This woman is Dikeledi and she does not truly know, at first, that women can be loved.
Her husband has only used her sexually for that is his nature, and is representative of the oppressive patriarchal culture. But, she then truly begins to know her neighbors, the
Thebolos. This marriage is one based on love and respect. She begins to see that sex is not something that should be taken, but something that should involve love.
This knowledge, which offers her a knowledge of her own self worth, pushes her to approach her husband for money to help pay for the childrens schooling, something she has
