cinematic biography of Pu Yi, the last emperor of the Ling Dynasty and a history of 20th Century China. Beginning with Pu Yis return to Communist China in 1951, the
film uses flashbacks to outline his enthronement at age three, his removal just three years later, and his subsequent expulsion from the Forbidden City at age eighteen. (The Forbidden City
is located on Tianenmen Square in Beijing, then called Peking. Commoners were not allowed to enter the city, which was surrounded by 35-foot walls and a moat.) In addition,
Pu Yis pseudo-collaboration with the Japanese (by serving as nothing more than a puppet for the governor of occupied Manchuria), and his later transformation into a model Communist was all
depicted in heart-wrenching detail. In essence, his personal story is that of a victim - one whose destiny is shaped by forces beyond his control. Nevertheless, Pu Yi
persists in his attempts to regain his lost power. Subject to very human failings Pu Yis ego motivates much of the relentless pursuit of his past nobility, but the
powers that be ultimately quell these futile desires/ attempts (The Last Emperor, 1987). This essay will examine the Chinese Imperial Dynastic tradition, a number of historical events
related to this period, and some of the socio-political reasons for wanting Pu Yi to take the throne within the constructs of the Bertolucci film.
The Last Emperor begins in 1951 with Pu Yis return from the Soviet Union where he had spent five years in prison, to a Chinese Communist
