examines the life and works of Berry Gordy. Berry Gordy: Life and Works Berry Gordy was born on November 28, 1929 in
Detroit, Michigan (History of Rock [2], 2007). He was born in Harper Hospital and was the 7th child of Berry and Bertha Gordy (History of Rock [2], 2007). His family
were relatively successful and were a middle-class family whose roots lay in Georgia farming as well as retail (History of Rock [2], 2007). They had, however, in 1922, moved to
Detroit when they had only 3 children (History of Rock [2], 2007). "It was here that they established a successful painting and construction business that allowed the family to purchase
a commercial building on the corner of St. Antoine and Farnsworth" (History of Rock [2], 2007). His father also opened a grocery store, calling it the Booker T. Washington grocery
store which symbolically, and realistically, instilled the values that his father associated with Washington such as "frugality, discipline, family unity and hard work" (History of Rock [2], 2007).
When Berry was a junior in high school he dropped out so that he could be a boxer, once fighting on the same
card as Joe Louis (History of Rock [2], 2007). "He ended a his respectable career as a featherweight in 1950" and then served in Korea, in the Army, from 1951-1953
