a gifted athlete who has a "natural" talent. Roy is on his way to a tryout for a major league baseball team when he meets and is shot by Harriet Bird, a demented woman. His confidence shaken, Roy does not pursue his dream again till he is in his early thirties, but gains a spot on a team down on its luck, the "Knights." He meets a woman, Iris Lemon, who is a positive force in his life, but also meets another woman who is negative, Memo, a "repeat" of Harriet Bird. Once again, Roy makes the wrong decisions and fails at his chance at redemption, but, this time, realizes what he has done. 3) An examination of The Natural shows that Roy was partially successful (in this quest for identity. 4) Roy is not completely successful because he does not really try to win the pennant game until after Iris has told him she is pregnant. 5) Oedipus is the protagonist in the ancient Greek epic poems by Homer. 6) It is Roys pride (hubris) that interferes with his emotional development. Iris represents maturity and redemption, and Memo represents further illusion. Roy chooses Memo because he cannot face the responsibility of true identity. 7) Turchi implies that Roys tears at the end of the book signify his total defeat. However, Roys admission that he had never learned from past mistakes can be interpreted as a sign of new and dawning maturity. 8) Im not sure what is meant by this question, but Malamud writes for the general reading public. 9) "I never did learn anything out of my past life, now I have to suffer again" (Malamud 241) indicates that Roy has finally begun to grow up.
