the current war in Iraq. Todays world is indeed a global environment and struggles to understand the differences between religions and cultures abound. Americans struggle to understand and
put the terrorist attacks into perspective and even perhaps to take away some semblance of meaning from the experience. This book helps to put many of these misunderstanding to
rest and describes the cultural and religious imperatives that drive the Islamic people, thereby at least affording readers the ability to understand the roots of Muslim extremism.
Lewis underscores some dramatic cultural and religious differences between Muslims and most Americans. For instance, he delves into the historical precedents that have
fueled Islamic fundamentalism and describes the cultural differences that make such history such an important part of the present for many Islamic people. These fundamental differences are often difficult
to understand and rationalize, but within the context of Lewis research such analysis becomes comprehensible. Lewis is in no way making
excuses for the Muslim extremists who perpetuate an ideology of hatred and terror, but he does assert that it is important to understand the roots of such thought and behavior.
In other words, the terrorist attacks and the anti-American sentiment that is exhibited by Islamic extremists is only partly rooted in current-day affairs. The reality is that hatred
of Westerners is founded in historical precedents that date back centuries. More specifically, there was a time when Westerners were responsible for the destruction of the homeland of the
