to realize that many of the slave holders were indeed eager to be rid of their responsibility as a result of having slaves, while the slaves were naturally eager to
gain the responsibilities that went along with their freedom. Bermuda was first discovered in the early 1500s, when it was
sighted by Spanish sea Captain Juan de Berm?dez, from whom it also takes its name (Bermuda History, 2003). Bermuda soon became an important landmark for those traveling between Spain
and the New World (Bermuda History, 2003). In 1609 Admiral Sir George Somers was headed for Jamestown, Virginia but his ship, the Sea Venture, was wrecked just off Bermuda
(Bermuda History, 2003). As he spent time on Bermuda using the wood there to build new boats, he enjoyed the island and decided to leave some men behind to
establish British claim to the area (Bermuda History, 2003). Slaves were introduced to Bermuda in 1616. Some were American
Indians but most were brought forcibly from Africa (Bermuda History, 2003). Typically, they were used as domestic servants but were not usually agricultural laborers as was the case with
slaves in the states (Bermuda History, 2003). In later years, Scots who were imprisoned for fighting against Cromwell were sent to Bermuda as slaves, and this was followed by
