one to a violent act is rising on a daily basis. Violence, and the ultimate outcome of murder which it all too often translates into, is becoming an ingrained
component of our society. The reasons for this increased level of violence will be briefly touched on below. What will become clear in this discussion is that all
forms of murder, regardless of their varied reasons and circumstances behind them, have one thing in common. That commonality is that they almost always leave secondary victims.
Those victims are the loved ones of the murder victim and even remote acquaintances. It is estimated, in fact, that each homicide victim has seven to ten close relatives
and a network of friends, neighbors, and other associates who are indirectly impacted by the homicide (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2001). These homicide survivors are secondary victims
of these horrendous crimes. Each is affected by the impacts of grief and bereavement. Steeves (2001) distinguishes between these terms:
"Bereavement is the time period following a loss when the affects of that loss are deeply felt. Grief is the strong, complex emotion
that accompanies loss, and mourning is the public rituals associated with bereavement, such as funerals, wearing black, and taking time off from work".
Far too little attention is paid to the bereavement process which these individuals must complete (Steeves, 1997). Even fewer programs exist
to address that process through therapeutic counseling (Steeves, 1997). The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to suggest a therapeutic structure for such groups. Steeves (2001) identifies one
