real heroes in a world that is inundated with sob stories from which modern day heroes emerge. Still, the concept of hero is quite enigmatic and the perception of what
a hero is today and what it was say two or three hundred years ago is rather interesting. Things are different now and heroes are called such if they put
up with a lot of grief such as in the case of the young, struggling mother who devotes her spare time to a volunteer soup kitchen. But a long time
ago a hero was most likely male and invincible. Heroes were the real deal then. They were strong and manly and although they were allowed to express emotion, they were
rugged and even brutal at times. Beowulf is certainly one of them. He is a hero in every sense of the word. First, a bit about the time period in
which Beowulf is written is appropriate, and helpful in understanding the story. The fifth through ninth centuries were perhaps the most turbulent in respect to British history ("Angelcynn" PG).
It was a time when England was first created, and the time of King Arthur and Beowulf, and the Viking Invasions and the foundation of the English
church (PG). Clearly, it was an exciting time in history, but daily life in this period was rather mundane. While that is the case, it was still interesting and for
example, most in that era were practitioners of the Pagan religion. In fact, they worshipped gods by the names of Of the gods of Tir, Woden and Thunor (PG).
