notable heroes of all time. He is a man who gave his life for others, proving to be one of the most powerful and noble leaders in literary history. The
following paper examines his interactions with other characters and discusses what made him the ideal leader. Beowulf In the story of Beowulf there is trouble at the home
of Hrothgar, a king. A monster has essentially caused havoc and the word of the problems eventually gets to Beowulf, who is a man that has already proven himself brave
and noble in the past. He hears of Hrothgars problems and makes his way to Hrothgars kingdom in order to help him. When he meets with Hrothgar he tells him,
"Hrothgar O sovran Hrothgar, to seek thee here" possessed of his "nerve and...might" (VI). He tells Hrothgar that he will do whatever is necessary even if "if death must take
me" (VI). He does not boast untruthfully and he truly presents himself as the servant of Hrothgar, promising him that he will help him in his problem. This is the
trait of a good leader, if not an ideal leader, for although he knows his skills and is not totally humble about them, he is willing to be at the
cause of a king in order to help him, essentially asking nothing in return. There is another character, Unferth, who approaches Beowulf in order to challenge him in a way.
He boasts of his own deeds and acts disrespectfully at the gathering. Beowulf answers him stating, "What a deal hast uttered, dear my Unferth, drunken with beer, of Breca now,
told of his triumph!" (VIII). He confronts him as a drunk man boasting of his deeds, and essentially puts him in his place without being confrontational. As a powerful and
