and how it chooses to address them. By using an allegorical depiction of Beowulf fighting against monsters, attaining glory, and then facing his inevitable death with a sense of honor,
Beowulf becomes more than a narrative; it becomes a mythic allegory for life in general, and Beowulfs struggle and defeat become the struggle and defeat that all humanity must eventually
endure. This is deeply apparent in the poems structure, which is largely divided into two halves: the successful fight against Grendel and his mother, and the ill-fated fight against the
dragon; when the two halves of the poem are viewed in conjunction with one another, its mythic intent becomes apparent as it draws upon both Anglo-Saxon and Christian values to
address two of lifes most fundamental questions: how to live well, and what the meaning of living is if death is inevitable. The first way in which Beowulf adheres to
a mythic and allegorical structure is that a key focus of the poem is on the conveying of the Pagan and Christian values that are embedded within the narrative; in
other words, it, like many myths, intends to convey a central lesson: how to live well. That Beowulf will concern itself with instructing the reader in lessons of value is
obvious from the very first lines, which exalt the "courage and greatness" of the lineage of Anglo-Saxon kings, and holds them up as an example of the kind of greatness
