"Beowulf , written in Old English sometime before the tenth century A.D., describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century" (Beowulf). It is the story of
Beowulf, a man who sought out adventure and acts of heroism because it was his nature to do so. Considering that it is an epic poem, and thus very long
much like a novel, there are many elements to the character of this man who fought against many evils. The following paper first compares Beowulf to the W.B. Yeats poem
"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death" as it involves the notion of fatalism. The paper then compares Beowulf to Rupert Brookes poem "The Soldier" as it relates to heroism and
patriotism. Beowulf and An Irish Airman Foresees His Death In Yeats poem there is a strong sense of fatalism as the narrator presents an image of knowing that
ones destiny is to die. Yeats states "I know that I shall meet my fate/ Somewhere among the clouds above;/ Those that I fight I do not hate,/ Those that
I guard I do not love" (Yeats 1-4). In this we see that there is an understanding that the job this narrator engages in will lead to death, and that
it is essentially the duty of this narrator. Beowulf is a man who sees his duty as that which involves risking his life. He goes out of his way to
do battle with things that are really not his immediate concern. This is evident in the beginning of the story when he hears of the problems Hrothgar is having with
