pensive. Both men are capable of meeting the necessary duties of a hero, but their different approaches to heroism significantly shape the stories. Beowulf is one of
the most arrogant heroes in the epic tradition. Early in the poem, Beowulf describes the many acts of bravery that occurred in his young life, including his battles with
monsters and with men that push him above many others in skillful combat. When Hrothgar, King of Denmark, is plagued by attacks from the monster Grendel, Beowulf prepares to
do battle once again. Beowulf sails to Denmark to take action in the name of Hrothgar, and kill this foe. When Grendel enters Hrothgars great hall to
take the lives of the men sleeping there, he is met by the formidable Beowulf, who wounds Grendel by tearing his arm off (Beowulf 47). Grendel retreats, and Beowulf
is declared the hero. Beowulf recognizes that it is his personal characteristics that led to his heroism, and he recognizes that no other man could have been met with
such success against Grendel (Beowulf 36). Although this is not the last time they encounter each other, it is a significant point in the determination of Beowulfs heroic character.
Gawain is presented with similar atrocities and the same type of need for retribution, though his choice of actions and his determinations in regards to battle are significantly different than
those of Beowulf. While Gawain presents the courtly knight approaching battle as a choice rather than a necessity, Beowulf determined that there were no others who could do what
he could do. Because of this difference in personal considerations, the reader is more apt to perceive Gawain as a controlled and mindful protector of Arthur, while Beowulf is
