battles and struggles. They are also two stories written with very different themes, or intentions. Beowulf is clearly a warriors tale, a tale of noble men and sacrifice for others.
In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight one is presented with a story that is more focused on a moral and on the notion of chivalry. In essence, Beowulf is
not a story that intends to teach, but rather tell of a great man, while Gawains story is intended to teach a moral. In light of these basic and obvious
differences one can see that in Gawains story there appears to be more humor, jesting, than there is in Beowulf which, honestly, appears to have none at all. Beowulfs tale
has no truly light moments for it is a warriors tale. The following paper examines the presence and lack of lightheartedness in the stories. Beowulf and Gawain and
the Green Knight As mentioned, Beowulf is a very serious story about battle and honor. Beowulf is a man who is willing to
always go out of his way to battle evil for the safety of others. It is a serious story and one that puts Beowulf in a position of hero without
any serious faults or weaknesses. As such the story has no frivolous moments, no humor for it si not necessary and was likely not part of the culture of legend
in the time in which it was written. Much of the story is filled with such excerpts as follows: "how ceaselessly Grendel harassed Hrothgar, what hate he bore him, what
murder and massacre, many a year, feud unfading" (Beowulf II). In this one sees a powerful seriousness that is constant throughout the story. There is nothing funny or lighthearted about
