on using this paper properly! Introduction Heroes do not only exist in epic literature. They often appear before us in our lives, either in the media or in person. For example, of late we have come to realize that many people became heroes in the light of September 11, 2001. In such light as this we have come to understand even more clearly that heroes are people, extraordinary people. In understanding more about heroes and what makes an individual a hero we compare and contrast the late Princess Diana and Beowulf, from the classic epic "Beowulf." Beowulf Beowulf is a man who, upon hearing of the troubles of the king, comes across the ocean with his men in order to deliver the king from his enemy, Grendel. He was not asked to do this. He merely felt that it was a task which needed to be done, and he felt that he and his men stood a chance of saving these people and the great hall in which Grendel resided. Now, while we may see this as incredibly selfless, it was also an act which spoke of arrogance. This is not to say that Beowulf was not righteous and honorable in offering to protect them. But, it is to say that, as a warrior, he maintained a sense of arrogance in regards to his abilities. This is further illustrated in the following : "Even though he is famous for his massive strength, Beowulf has other attributes that are noticeable other than his strength. These attributes, arrogance, bravery, and a strong love for his people are what make Beowulf become such a powerful, epic hero. Beowulf is arrogant. He constantly brags about his supreme strength.
