These were men who could perform superhuman feats without breaking a sweat or a promise. In a world of ordinary, their status as heroes won them praise, adulation and
made them extraordinary. Two of classical literatures most enduring heroes, Beowulf and Arthur stood for the principles of their respective times and stood alone. They represented the people,
but they themselves were a breed apart from their contemporaries. Both of these men were commanding in their physical presence, demanding of respect, and willing to die to protect
the people of their respective kingdoms. Beowulf was the leading protagonist of a Danish epic poem that is believed to have been composed by an unknown author during
the eighth century A.D. He was a rather nomadic warrior, who would fight battles for country that needed his services. He was particularly close to King Hrothgar of
Denmark, who serves as a father figure. Hrothgar desperately needs Beowulfs assistance because his subjects are being senselessly slaughtered by Grendel the monster. To defeat him would be
a formidable task, to be sure, and is one that Beowulf embraces completely because it is in keeping with his "love of praise and... desire for glory" (McNary 528).
Beowulf is strong, courageous and brave in combat, and likes nothing better than to expound on his military accomplishments to anyone who will listen. With more than a little
pride, Beowulf boasts, "Of force in fight no feebler I count me, / in grim war-deeds, than Grendel deems him. / Not with the sword, then, to sleep of death
/ his life will I give, though it lie in my power. / No skill is his to strike against me, / my shield to hew though he hardy be,
