A 4 page essay that contrasts and compares Beowulf with Aeneas. Beowulf is the protagonist in an Old English epic of the same name by an anonymous poet. Aeneas is the protagonist in the ancient Roman epic of Virgil, the Aeneid. These two heroes each represent transitions in their societies. Beowulf provides the transition between a world terrorized by evil to one of peace. Aeneas provides the transition from the old world of Troy to the glory of the new world of Rome. In providing these transitions, each epic offers insight on the differing worldviews that each work represents, that is, the world of Roman values and the world of ninth century Germanic society. that is, the world of Roman values and the world of ninth century Germanic society. In Book II of the Aeneid, Virgil has Aeneas recount to the Dido, the
Queen of Carthage, which is the city where Aeneas and his men have found refuge, the tale of Troys last days. As with Beowulf, whose story is created centuries later,
Aeneas is bound by the heroic values of a warrior class. However, while Aeneas first inclination is to fight the invading Greeks, he is presented with portents and powerful visual
images that indicate that the gods have a more significant fate for him. Throughout the Aeneid, Aeneas sets aside his own desires and warrior instincts in order to take action
that is based on his sense of duty; actions that destined to lead to the founding of Rome. Aeneas tells Dido how he realized that his father Anchises presents Troys
past, which is now gone, and his son is the future (the founding of Rome), and he is the transitionary figure destined to bring this about. A scenario that
has a hero turning his back on battle in order to meet a greater destiny would have been antithetical to the warrior culture of medieval Germanic societies. Beowulf, a young
