integrity. It is a story of romance and history and a story of fantasy. In this story one can read a richness to the culture and the story itself. Within
this story lie primary characters. One is obviously Beowulf. Another, however, is Hrothgar. Hrothgar is a king, a good king, and a man who expects, as well as hopes, for
the best in men, knowing honor and integrity in others. With that in mind the following paper compares two different passages from the epic tale/poem. Beowulf Hrothgar, as mentioned,
is a good king and much of his role in the story seems to be that of offering Beowulf advice on how to be a good king. But, he is
also showing caution, at least at first, concerning Beowulf. The first excerpt to be examined shows Hrothgar speaking to Beowulf: "For fight defensive, Friend my Beowulf, to succor and save,
thou hast sought us here" (VII). He tells Beowulf about incidents, seemingly to get his attention and perhaps test whether or not Beowulf may be a worthy and noble man.
He states, "Boasted full oft, as my beer they drank, earls oer the ale-cup, armed men, that they would bide in the beer-hall here, Grendels attack with terror of blades"
(VII). In this he is telling Beowulf that he had many apparently noble men claiming they would get rid of the beast but they drank and boasted, ultimately ending up
dead the next day. In this excerpt it seems as though Hrothgar, though knowledgeable about Beowulf and his integrity perhaps, is demonstrating that he has no need for Beowulf
if he is all talk. As a good and noble king Hrothgar knows strength and understands the need to have men of honor on his side, and in the world.
