all codes relating to a society have a tendency to do, they portrayed the perfect, the ideal, of the hero and the ideal individual in an ideal society. In essence,
while they were codes, there were also clearly incidents and people and events that illustrate the people were not always strict in relationship to those codes. They were, ultimately, ideals,
and those ideals were clearly represented in the character of Beowulf. The following paper examines the codes and then also illustrates places in the poem wherein those codes seem non
existent or how the situations present realities that cannot necessarily be dealt with through the codes presented in the character of Beowulf. Beowulf
The character of Beowulf is all but perfect, and perhaps arguably perfect. He is a man who is not arrogant or proud. He is aware of his strengths
and his power and yet also aware that this skill, his abilities, are there for helping others. One critic notes, "His good manner shows that his previous accomplishments have
not gone to his head. Beowulfs heroic personality is reflected by his willingness to risk his life for his ideals, especially in his fight with the dragon" (Holz; Bartusik; Melindez).
While there is a sense of pride, it is not an arrogant pride or a pride that is only involved in self for Beowulf is proud of being able to
help others, not for prides sake or pride in his own identity aside from how it benefits others. He is a relatively humble man who realizes that he was somehow
