where they stand politically. Bennett is a hard-line conservative and does not stray from that position. He supports wholeheartedly everything the United States had done in the past and is
likely to do in the future, without question. And he has harsh words for anyone who criticizes U.S. policy, especially in the wake of the September 11 attacks. He thinks
that criticism of any kind is misguided, yet at the same time he champions the idea of America as a bastion of individual rights and freedoms. He doesnt seem to
see the contradiction in the two positions. His main concerns in the book are his disapproval of what he calls the "anti-Americanism" that has sprung up among Americans since 9/11,
which he sees as being connected to the Left and what he perceives as its moral relativism. That is, he thinks that progressives insist on seeing everything as relative; that
there is nothing they ever condemn. He is particularly incensed by those who sought for an explanation of the attack other than the "They hate us for our freedoms" remark
made by President Bush. While that may be true, even the most ardent patriots must surely have wondered if there was something more to it. Bennett seems to think that
even daring to pose the question is somehow disloyal. The subtitle of the book is Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism; the implication here is that anyone who dissents
has lost their moral compass, and can perhaps be considered immoral. Certainly he is convinced that they dont clearly see whats going on around them. Like all zealots, he is
seemingly convinced that only he has been given true understanding. He is on firmer ground when he discusses his skepticism about claims by Islamic groups that Islam does not promote
