era in which these two authors lived. Benjamin Franklins The Autobiography provides an accurate, detailed and experiential report on the social structure, customs and culture of colonial America, while
also placing this information within a clearly historical perspective. Olaudah Equiano provides the same type of detailed information in his creation The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, while providing
information about the culture, social structures and customs of tribal Africa from the perspective of someone removed from their homeland. The impact of these two similarly structured works is
based on the descriptive narratives created by the writers. The historical perspective related through the story is almost secondary to the creation of culture and description significant to the
success of each book. Though the history described is important to the impact of each of these books, the removal of the historical bases would not diminish the
colorful, rich and interesting developments provided within each work. Benjamin Franklins writings follow a time line approach to his life, also utilizing epistolary considerations as a means to link
the generations. His autobiography begins with a letter to his son, and the context of this letter springboards his descriptions of life in colonial America. The use of
the letter pulls the reader into the familiar structure of the book, and creates the continued expectation of familiar concepts, names, dates and cultural considerations for the reader. Franklin also
creates small, interesting and very detailed "moments-in-time" that present subjects relative to this era in American history. Sometimes these moments are historical snapshots, like his description of the political
interactions relative to the war with France in 1754; other picture are much more descriptive and much less historically based, like his presentation of the details of the city streets
