a scientist, a noble and curious man with a mind that seemed to possess so many of the integral ideals of the American people. He was also one of the most important figures involved in the development of the country, as well as the development of the Constitution of the United States of America. The following paper examines his involvement and his influence in the creation of that constitution. Benjamin Franklin and the Constitution In relationship to his character, a very important element to consider when understanding Franklins contribution to the Constitution, it is noted that he was highly regarded by people on two continents. He was something of an emissary and a peacekeeper, understanding both sides of many issues and admired "for his scientific accomplishments, wit, unpretentious manners, diplomatic ability, and kindly personality. He employed these personal qualities in the service of his country as an able diplomat and as the universally respected advocate of compromise in the critical moments of the early republic" (Benjamin Franklin: Pennsylvania, 2006). In his autobiography one can see the basic intelligence and importance of Franklin as he contemplates issues involving America as it relates to England. He stated, "I recollected that about 20 years before, a clause in a bill brought into Parliament by the ministry had proposd to make the kings instructions laws in the colonies, but the clause was thrown out by the Commons" (Franklin [1], 1791). His words, and his life, demonstrate a man of great intelligence and character, a man who could see many sides without being overly passionate or bitter, a man who could see the strength in government development for America, but a man who understood humanity as well.
