He was an inventor, a scholar of sorts, a politician, and a generally interesting individual. The following paper presents a brief examination of his life. Benjamin Franklin Benjamin
Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston. He was, interestingly enough, the 10th son of his father, Josiah Franklin. His mother was Abiah Folger who was the second
wife of Josiah. Josiah wanted Benjamin to go into the clergy but they could not afford the schooling that was necessary for such an occupation. So, with his love of
reading he quickly became an apprentice for his brother James. James was a printer. "After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell
their products in the streets" (Independence Hall Association, 2004). At the age of 15 Benjamin helped his brother with the first real newspaper in Boston. Benjamin wanted to write
for this paper, but knew his brother would not allow it so Benjamin started secretly writing letters and would sign them as a fictional widow named Silence Dogood. "Dogood was
filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door
at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real Silence Dogood" (Independence Hall Association,
2004). At the age of 16 he was found out. In 1723 he left his home, trying out New York, New Jersey, and then Philadelphia. At this point he had
