the reader -- at first -- as being primarily concerned with societal dictums that prevented nineteenth century men from fully exploring the emotional side of their nature -- an inability to love, as it were. However, as the plot develops, Constant delves into the depths of the nineteenth century French male psyche and demonstrates the depth of emotion that is only superficially suppressed, as it lurks just beneath the surface and tortures the conscience of the young male protagonist, Adolphe. The plot to Adolphe is relatively simple. Born to a noble family so that he enjoys all of the advantages of rank and privilege, Adolphe is also gifted with natural intelligence. Yet, despite these advantages, he is haunted by a sense of the meaninglessness of life, which causes him to seek distraction in the pursuit of women, which he has been taught at his fathers knee is the prerogative of men. However, Adolphe makes the mistake of actually falling in love, and the object of his desire is an older, married woman, Ellenore. Adolphe pursues Ellenore, woos her and wins her, only to chafe at the fact that this illicit affair blocks his public career. The off-on relationship that Adolphe has with Ellenore constitutes the bulk of the narrative. Eventually, however, he rejects her, and the pain of this separation results in her death. Instead of prospering, now that he is free of Ellenore, Adolphe wanders around Europe, full of grief and guilt, finally dying himself in Italy. As Constant tells this story, the narrative is interwoven with the details and ramifications of the patriarchal double-standard that governed sexual relations and the game of sexual conquest played by Adolphe and his cohorts.
