also, statistical tests can be used as a basis for drawing conclusions about what study results mean within "some broad context (inferential statistics)" (Murphy, Myors and Wolach, 2009, p. 1).
The goal of inferential statistics, in other words, is to determine if broader inferences can logical be made based on research data that can then be applied to a
general population. Considering this information, the benefit of statistical testing of college students in regards to depression can benefit the students in that this research tool indicates the applicability of
the resulting data. However, the capacity to draw inferences from statistical testing a controversial subject, as much as been written concerning the "causes and cures for error in
statistical inference" (Murphy, Myors and Wolach, 2009, p. 1). If a study does not have significant statistical power this can lead to mistaken conclusions concerning the applicability of the results
of the study. The conclusion that a treatment is ineffective may say more about the "low level of statistical power" in the study as it does about the "value of
the treatment" (Murphy, Myors and Wolach, 2009, pp. 1-2). The potential benefits of research are frequently easier to assess for biomedical research than for social/behavioral research (Koocher and Keith-Spiegel,
2008). Nevertheless, it is widely acknowledged that using testing measures to screen for depression is beneficial, as this identifies individuals who need help, hopefully before their condition has reached a
critical level that endangers their overall health (Mitchell and Coyne, 2010). Researchers have formulated "quick and simple methods" for evaluating depressive symptoms that are acceptable to both patients and providers
