in Winchester and ordained in 943 by St. Alphege the Bald (St. Ethelwold, 2005). He joined the Benedictines at Glastonbury under St. Dunstan and became the Abbot of Abingdon in
955 and bishop in 963 (St. Ethelwold, 2005). Ethelwold founded or restored the abbeys of Ely, Chertsey, Milton Abbas, Newminister, Peterborough and Thorney (St. Ethelwold, 2005). He authored Regularis Concordia,
a monastic decree based on the Benedictine Rule; however, Ethelwold is probably best known in the art world for founding a distinctive school of manuscript illumination (St. Ethelwold, 2005).
During the period in which the Anglo-Saxon culture in England was recovering from numerous Scandinavian invasions, the lead in Anglo-Saxon manuscript illumination passed to the south, where Saints Dunstan and
Ethelwold helped to re-establish monasticism in England during the mid-tenth century (Anglo-Saxon art and architecture, 2005). During this time, a distinctive style of illumination developed, which is referred to as
