States in 1894 and took up residence in Pocatella Idaho (Idaho Museum of Natural History, 2007). A professional photographer, Wrensted captured much of the essence of turn-of-the-century America.
Her photographs serve as an important historical record and insight into the many changes that were taking place during that time. Many of her subjects were Native American.
Accurately interpreting these photographs, however, requires that the viewer be cognizant of the many circumstances that were interacting during this period in American history.
While beautifully executed, many of Wrensteds photographs of Native American subjects are rifled with stereotypical ideas of Native Americans. This is due, in part, to the deliberate actions of
the photographer herself. It is apparent when reviewing Wrensted photographic depictions of these people, for example, that Wrensted was captivated both with their physical appearance and with the "aura" of
Native America. It is also apparent that she took considerable artistic license in attiring and posing her subjects. Consequently, the viewer of these photographs must interpret them in
light of the circumstances under which they were photographed if they are to derive a true sense of the historical accuracy and inaccuracies which are depicted.
The time bracketing the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth century were a time of many misunderstandings when it came
to Native Americans. It was also a time when there were many cultural expectations placed on these people. Americans were captivated with Native Americans and they held them
in awe. At the same time, however, Americans were fearful of what Native Americans represented. They were viewed as a semi-wild people that needed taming, as inferiors that
