The first bank t operate in Australia was the Bank of New South Wales, which started trading I 1817, by the nineteenth century there were 26 banks, even at this stage there was a mixture of operations, some banks operating locally whilst other operated nationally. The financial crash that occupied in the 1890s created a position where there was a flurry of mergers and acquisitions, but the competitive structure changed again in the twentieth century when a range of private banks sprouted up, the thirty reduced to nine by the time the Second World War started (Wright, 1999). The patterns in the industry are growth followed by rationalisation. The industry today reflects this history that has continued. Today there is an oligopoly, with four major banks; ANZ Banking Group, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the National Australia Bank and Westpac, and two major insurance companies dominating the banking and finance market. Regulations are in place to prevent any further concentration of the market and retain a competitive environment (Wright, 1999). The industry is also undergoing change, customers are demanding more and technology is making itself felt within increased demand and take up for e-banking. The banks are having to respond to this as well as increased international competition. The economy has impacted on the banking sector, with a slow down in growth, and also a change in the concerns of the banks, in 2000 the major industry concern was that of an equity market crash, however, the number one concern is now credit risk (Ayling, 2002).
