Then, each of the three companies is explored in terms of their written statements and actions taken to fulfill the company's goals towards social responsibility. Each company also faced a specific crisis, at which time, they could live by their published principles or not. They each did. Johnson & Johnson faced the fact that their Tylenol containers had been tampered with resulting in the deaths of eight people. Levi Strauss learned through a media report that one of their contractors was violating human rights with employees. Ben & Jerry's faced an incident involving the rainforest. It comes from a belief and vision that business should be about more than making money. They should contribute to their communities. Makower bases his comments about principles that
demonstrate social responsibility. For example, the communitys health is important, which means it needs to be maintained. That principle is then extended to respecting and protecting the natural environment. It
also means that corporate executives must plan for the long-term, rather than just the short-term. At the same time, the company must be sure the suppliers from whom they purchase
materials also follow similar kinds of principles. In todays world, consumers tend to not buy from companies who engage in unethical or discriminatory business practices (1994). According to
Makower, when companies follow these kinds of principles, they create a socially responsible climate. It is becoming clear that companies will be asked to evaluate their practices and policies on
a broader perspective, including society instead of just their net profit. Companies like Ben & Jerrys have found that being socially responsible does increase net profit, however. Furthermore, there are
few costs involved in a company practicing this kind of responsibility. Francis Joseph Aguilar also points to the fact that corporations who practice ethical management find their companies growing. Aguilar
notes that to be successful in this arena, companies must already be sensitive to ethical issues; they must be managed well; they must establish a program; and they need to
have a workforce comprised of ethical people. When management is ethical in its decisions, employees tend to stay with the company. Furthermore, they are more motivated to do a good
