on to live a truly fulfilling and successful life. This paper gives a brief outline of his life and accomplishments in chronological order. Biography Benjamin S. Carson ("Ben")
was born in Detroit, Michigan September 18, 1951. His mother Sonya, who "had dropped out of school in the third grade," married when she was only 13 and subsequently
divorced Bens father (Benjamin S. Carson, MD, 2005). She raised Ben and his older brother Curtis on her own, working multiple jobs to support the family (B.S. Carson, MD,
2005). Perhaps because she was so busy, both boys fell behind in school, so much so that by the time they got to the fifth grade, Carson was last
in his class (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). "His classmates called him dummy and he developed a violent, uncontrollable temper" (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). When Sonya saw what was happening
to her sons, she determined to turn their lives around (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). She limited their television watching and refused to let them play outside until theyd done
their daily homework; in addition, and perhaps most surprisingly, she "required them to read two library books a week and to give her written reports on their reading even though,
with her poor education, she could barely read what they had written (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). Thanks to all the outside reading he did, Ben was able to answer
questions in class when nobody else could, and soon realized that he wasnt a dummy (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). He continued to work hard and "within a year he
was at the top of his class" (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005). He discovered a great love of learning, and "began to read voraciously on all subjects" (B.S. Carson, MD, 2005).
