It is the story of one womans struggle to somehow find peace with her past and her present, much of which is experienced through the death, or the murder, of
her child whose name is Beloved. In the following paper we examine some of the elements in Morrisons book, discussing the time period, geographical location, characters and other elements.
Beloved Morrisons story takes place during the times of slavery as well as the times when slavery had been abolished. Sethe was a woman who had known slavery for
many years, having primarily lived on one plantation, then escaping into freedom. As the story opens the time period is 1873 and Sethe is free with her daughter Denver. The
majority of the story takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio. While other parts of the story take place in various other locations, the present time and the time most discussed takes
place in this city. As we have noted, the primary player in the story is Sethe. We also have her daughter Denver, two sons that have previously left and have
no truly powerful role in the story, her dead daughter Beloved, Baby Suggs who is the grandmother of Denver and Sethes children, and many others. We begin with Sethe
who seems to have been originally placed in the plantation to serve as the woman of the slaves. She was somewhat innocent and was allowed, in some manner of speaking,
to pick a husband from the slaves that existed there. Halle was the man that Sethe would marry. He was the son of Baby Suggs. He would eventually be killed
or lost, leaving Sethe to find Baby Suggs and live with her. Baby Suggs was a woman who had learned not to become attached to her children, for all but
