a ghost story and a mystery. It is a story of redemption and finding piece with the past as well as with oneself. In this story the character of Beloved comes into the lives of the people in the story. Beloved is something of a ghost that has manifested herself. In so doing she interferes with and changes the lives of those in the story. Beloved interacts with and confronts the identity of Sethe, Denver, and Paul D. and essentially seems to symbolize their own personal demons, ultimately making them overcome their personal demons. The following paper examines how the character of Beloved does this with each individual character in the novel. Sethe Sethe is Beloveds mother and as such is a woman with many powerful personal demons. While the reader of the novel will not necessarily know this at first, the truth slowly comes out in the novel as it progresses. The reader, if not aware of the plot of the story before reading it, will find that Sethe killed her infant daughter, Beloved, many years ago and that the ghost who has haunted their home for so long is the ghost of that murdered infant. Sethe has had to live with her action for many years. She has attempted to find a place in herself wherein she can survive and go on despite her actions. It is a very cloudy place that almost seems to cling to this ghost in the house, prior to Beloveds physical appearance. This is noted on the first page of the story when the narrator states, "124 was spiteful. Full of a babys venom. The women in the house knew it and so did the children" (Morrison 3).
