concepts of belong and not belonging are illustrated in books and film. Discussion Stephen Herricks novel The Simple Gift centers on Billy, who at age 16 has run away from
an abusive father and, in the best hobo fashion, hops on a freight train (Herrick, 2004). Since he uses the railroad to make his escape, its not surprising that he
makes a home for himself in an abandoned rail car where he meets two other lonely people, Old Bill and Caitlin (Herrick, 2004). Old Bill, as the name implies, is
an order man but Caitlin is a girl his own age. Each of these three mis-matched people lives in a different world: Caitlin is a rich girl, which means that
she has a very different lifestyle from the others. Billy falls in love with her, despite their differences, and she with him, seeing something in him worthwhile (Herrick, 2004).
In much the same way, a relationship develops between Billy and Old Bill. The latter is a homeless drunk, but Billy finds something worthwhile in him, and as the two
become closer, Old Bill becomes something of a father figure for the young man (Herrick, 2004). Herricks style is very unusual, since hes written the book in blank verse.
This means that it calls attention to itself but it does so with a purpose. Each poem, because it is a poem, is of necessity a self-contained unit. The reader
then is forced to consider the meaning of each by itself, which in turn reinforces the idea of separation. The book sets out two different constructs for the characters: when
they are by themselves they belong to themselves, but not to one another; only when they let their guard down and let the other person in do they belong to
