have caused inherent conflicts for many black women. Her feminist perspective, which is based on the recognition that black women are not only faced with the same issues as
other women: gender-based oppression, stereotyping, conflicts with roles, and the woman as focus of the family, but that black women are also faced with racial inequalities, prejudices and racial
stereotyping as well. In order to understand Bell Hooks philosophy on feminism, it is imperative to understand her perspective first. She does not attempt to first take
a feminist perspective and then determine the impacts of racial issues on top of this. Instead, she attempts to show that there are determined racial dilemmas and that women
are inherently affected by the sexual dimensions to these issues. Hooks work is especially compelling in the way in which she incorporates racial and gender elements into cultural theory,
recognizing the elements that have created the societal structures in America over the past century. In other words, Hooks work not only looks at contemporary feminism, but also recognizes
that factors that have determined racial and feminist perspectives. It is interesting to note that Hooks biographical information suggests that she was impacted by being imbedded in the
same culture and social constraints that she includes as elements of her perspective on feminism. She was raised in a working class family, and her understanding of the role
of women and the racial constraints of American society come from her experiential focus. She does not attempt to provide an overview of racism or gender biases without demonstrating
