has pondered the question of the origin of creation, and come to the conclusion that the existence of the world and the human race implies the existence of a creator.
Throughout the majority of Western history, philosophers have addressed the veracity of this conclusion, and the vast majority has discerned it to be accurate - that God exists. The
following discussion will, first of all, consider a sampling of some of the most famous philosophical arguments concerning the existence of God -- Augustine, Descartes, and Paley pro existence;
with Hume presenting the opposing view - and, then, consider some of the ramifications of these arguments. In his Confessions, St. Augustine, one of the early founders of the
Christian Church, explains the basis for his belief in Gods existence. Augustine begins by stating a foundation that is indisputable - that we exist. He then states that we are
alive, and asks his readers if they understand that statement. The fact of understanding implies that the reader possesses reason. Augustine then presents a hierarchy of being, with inanimate objects
at the bottom of the ladder, and humanity at the top, by virtue of the faculty of reason (Augustine of Hippo, 2001). After carefully delineating a hierarchy of existence,
Augustine argues that it is only logical to assume that the ladder continues and that the being higher then humanity is, by definition, God. In other words, Augustine establishes a
pattern and then suggests that it is logical that the pattern continues. While this is certainly a reasonable assumption that is based on the evidence that Augustine provides, simply because
