this topic is important in the scheme of things as it relates to curricula. The article begins with an anecdote. The author explains that Alma is a high school sophomore
who is doing an experiment by observing teens eating in the lunchroom and noticing how many of them eat alone (Beland, 2007). The article then goes on to note that
in one classroom, the idea of labeling and stereotyping are discussed (Beland, 2007). These are sociological concepts, but one can see that a teacher found a way to incorporate ideas
about general life into an academic classroom. In essence, the schools teach reading and writing, and incorporate some semblance of morals and may even try to create social life by
sponsoring activities like dances and trips, but rarely do teachers incorporate social information into the classrooms. In the classroom that does provide information about stereotyping and labeling, as noted
in Belands (2007) piece, the children also discuss what it is like to live in an unfamiliar neighborhood. How to create a more inclusive school community is a part
of the discussion (Beland, 2005). The article is more about making students feel comfortable. In other words, the article is not just about social life. Rather, it seems to
focus on the development of people skills for careers in the future. Why is this important? The author explains that "many employers say the real test for high
school graduates is succeeding in the global economy" (Beland, 2005, p.69). The five most important skills for high school graduates are deemed to be the possession of a work ethic,
