Ella Ruth is an elderly lady whose teen years coincided with the Great Depression. Born in 1921 in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Ella Ruth
was emerging from her teen years at the same time that the country was emerging from the Depression. Ella Ruth notes that the Depression affected everyone, but that it
may have affected those in East Tennessee less than it did those in other places. The area was depressed anyway; the Depression only slightly worsened normal conditions.
She recalls with great clarity what life was like for her; today the teens in her life are her great-grandchildren. She sees many differences,
but she sees many similarities as well. The Interview Q.: What was high school like for you?
A.: School sure was different from what I see my great-grandchildren doing! One thing I see thats very different is that we always had penmanship classes,
all the way through school. Theres so much difference now; schools dont seem to care if students can write legibly or not.
We also had to write a lot of compositions. There was a lot of attention to grammar, spelling and composition, but sometimes it seemed that teachers cared more about
neatness than content. There werent any ballpoint pens, you know. We used ink wells and had to blot pages so that the ink didnt smear. If it
did, then we had to copy the entire page over again. A few people had fountain pens that had ink cartridges in them so they didnt have to use
