children and young people for that world. In order to understand fully what is needed in regards to teaching qualifications, it is helpful to see the present in terms of
how it relates to the past. This scenario emphasizes the need to promote teaching as a profession that is crucial to the future of this country. The feminization of
teaching, which occurred in the late nineteenth century, brought teaching under the patriarchal designation of "womens work." As in any profession that has been dominated by women, this led to
a rationalization of authoritarian intervention in regards to overseeing teaching practice. This paradigm governing education reached its zenith when American public school systems adopted a mechanistic view of education, inspired
by the Industrial Revolution and the factory system. Knowledge was perceived as a product and students were seen as empty vessels into which it could be dispensed, in standardized fashion,
with the teacher acting as hardly more than a factory line worker. This paradigm has most decidedly been proven wrong, but remnants of it can still be seen in current
educational policy, such as high stakes testing, which places more emphasis on meeting a preset criterion than on a teachers professional judgement. History shows there were salient objections to
"factory" educational paradigm even at during the time when it held prominence. For example, American educator John Dewey believed that the focus of curricula should not be on the subject
matter, per se, but rather on how the study of a particular subject matter affected the student (Dewey, 1944). Many educational experts today, such as Gunzenhauser (2003), feel that the
