tutorial presentation of what the life of a slave could have been like based on three different texts: "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" by Frederick Douglass, "Incidents
in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs and the novel "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. Being a Slave As a child, a female child, this little
African girl was taken from her parents at the age of 3 and sold to another plantation where she was raised by an older woman who was often given the
duty of "training" the young children to be good slaves. As this little girl grew up she did not really understand the pain and suffering experienced by many slaves as
she was somewhat sheltered in her little environment with the old woman who never allowed her to call her mother. This is the sort of childhood experienced by the famous
Frederick Douglass who never, as a child, found himself exposed to the horrors of slavery as a child. He felt his childhood was pleasant until he was old enough to
know that he was a slave and until he was old enough to experience the suffering and see the suffering endured by others. This little girl, by the time
she was 13, found what slavery was about as she witnessed young women being taken away in the dark of the night and come back crying and abused somehow. As
she grew a bit older she began to understand the subtle signs of rape, something she knew she was likely to become the victim of at the hands of her
